In crossing the tropic of Capricorn, I thought this circle of latitude would merely represent a theoretical way point against which to further map our progress. This hasn’t quite been the case. The change was almost instantaneous, as if we had crossed from a sunny summer’s day into a pleasantly air conditioned room. The air temperatures fell away and the wind began to blow. This contrast in conditions was striking; after all we are supposedly still in the sub-topics, approximately level with Montevideo and Cape Town!
