Hey ho and off we go!

Labs sorted, ship fuelled, scientists ready… well almost. The majority of us were able to escape the final preparations to wave goodbye to Southampton. And what a sunny day for it! With the car parks, high rise flats and Queen Elizabeth escaping behind us we had a calm day in the Solent. Leaving Dock Gate 4 was one of the things I have been looking forward to most. Having studied at the National Oceanography Centre for 4 years it was a fantastic feeling to finally be leaving it behind to take part in the science at sea.

We spent the day having a sight seeing tour of the Solent. The tour guide wasn’t up to much but it did allow for the azimuth thrusters to be re-calibrated after the ship re-fit this summer. Headed west all was calm at sea, and we had a fabulous view of the Needles at the western end of the Isle of Wight. Generally a calm day, with anticipation building for the first CTD cast on Wednesday afternoon.
